Contract with Leicester City Council
November 2002: Biffa are announced as the preferred bidder by Leicester City Council, to commence a 25 year integrated municipal contract to cover collection, sorting, recycling, treatment and ultimately disposal of the City's municipal waste streams to meet the Government's waste targets.

Biffa will collect household waste and recyclable items from 117,000 households. The aim is to reach the recycling target of 40% by 2005 and 70% during the life of the contract. In May 2003 the contract was confirmed and work commenced on the building of a new £30million waste recycling facility in Leicester.

Acquisition of Hales
In June 2003 Biffa acquired Hales Waste Control and RMC Environmental Service for £141m. Hales accounts for approximately 2% of the UK waste market. Its solid waste operations include industrial and commercial collection services, transfer stations, materials recycling facilities and operational landfills.

In the financial year to 31 December 2002, based on its management accounts, Hales had turnover of approximately £112m and profit before tax of approximately £9m.

The acquisition complements Biffa’s established operations of collection, landfill and special waste and enhances its ability to capitalise on opportunities from the implementation of future legislation.

The acquisition reinforces Biffa's continued growth strategy and confirms Biffa’s position as a leading waste management company in the UK.
